Position Title Archaeological Consultant

AECOM is seeking an Archaeological Consultant with experience in historic environment assessment, EIA and mitigation design to take forward a broad range of projects through from initial planning to final completion. This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established Archaeology and Heritage team and to contribute to a variety of schemes from mixed-use development to large-scale infrastructure.
This Archaeological position is to be based in London Wimbledon as part of a wider national team of experienced archaeology and built heritage consultants delivering quality projects to time and budget. You will be offered support to expand your experience and develop within a structured, friendly team environment.
AECOM’s heritage team comprises about 30 staff across the UK with specialisms in archaeology, built heritage, historic landscapes and conservation. We work closely with our multi-disciplinary environment teams as well as with architects, conservation engineers and other specialists involved in conservation projects.
We are now looking to enhance and grow our team with an individual with a sound technical background and experience of working in the commercial heritage field who shares our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The team provides services ranging from feasibility studies, historic environment impact assessment, and fieldwork design and management on a wide range of contracts for external clients and internal facing AECOM business lines.
Our clients are from the private and public sector and our leading UK clients include Highways England, Environment Agency, HCA, HS2, and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local and national infrastructure improvements for major clients. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:
A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down cultural heritage lead;
HS2 Phase 1 enabling works central section – archaeology and built heritage design and management;
HS2 Phase 2b – Heritage lead for Lot 2 (Leeds South);
Environment Agency secondments advising on flood alleviation and water management projects;
Impact assessment and mitigation management for several large-scale highways schemes in England and Northern Ireland;
Impact assessments of numerous development types – from minerals to residential.
Work as part of the heritage team on multi-disciplinary projects;
Undertake independent archival research;
Organise and undertake unaccompanied site visits and walk-over surveys;
Prepare, or contribute to, assessment and other technical reports such as desk-based assessments and environmental statements;
Analyse and assess the contribution that setting makes to the significance of a heritage asset and how setting may be impacted by a scheme proposal;
Manage workloads to ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget;
Maintain professionalism and excellence through strong writing skills and behaviours;
Engage in effective consultation with statutory and non-statutory consultees;
Work with engineers and designers to inform mitigation strategies;
Liaise effectively with managers, consultants from other disciplines and other stakeholders as required.
Excellent research skills are essential;
Good technical and communication skills and a sound knowledge of UK heritage legislation and policy;
Evidence of ability to work collaboratively within a large team and ability to manage own time both within a team or alone to tight deadlines;
Driving licence essential;
You will be able to demonstrate experience or understanding of Health and Safety compliance and prepare risk assessments;
- You will have a first degree in archaeology or a related subject. You will be a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists at an appropriate level or be eligible to join with AECOM’s support.
