Job Summary

The Role

Our Resources, Power and Industry (RPI) team have a new opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join the Energy team. This role can be based in either Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne with opportunities to identify strategic opportunities, client development, and manage a small team.

This is an exciting time for AECOM’s RPI business as the energy market continues to grow resulting in AECOM securing major large scale projects.

The role of Principal Engineer Transmission & Distribution Planning requires a thorough understanding of all aspects of transmission and distribution planning for both regulated and industrial networks. The role requires hands on capabilities with respect to commonly used power system analysis tools with a particular focus on PSS/E and PSCAD. PowerFactory and ETAP expertise is desirable. A practical understanding of the regulatory, economic, and social aspects of power system planning will complement this detailed technical understanding.

As part of this role you will:

  • Project manage medium to large scale projects

  • Deliver design services and advice direct to clients

  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvement

  • Participate in business development

  • Assist in work planning and programming within the team

  • Assist in training, leading and mentoring junior team members

Minimum Requirements

Technical Requirements and Knowledge

  • Technical due diligence on project development connection options and network capacity and constraint assessment for the preferred development capacity

  • Technical review of grid connection capability of preferred plant with respect to proposed connection point on the network

  • Voltage and Reactive control design in consultation with OEM vendors to feed into the connection study and ensure the best economic project balance of plant design outcome

  • Completion of initial power system studies to ensure that the connection of the project is feasible

  • Detailed analysis of connection assets to fully understand the impact of the project on the network to which it is connecting including draft development of connection SLDs to feed into the feasibility and detailed studies

  • Detailed technical studies using PSS/e and PSCAD software platforms to assess compliance against the relevant technical requirements of the National Electricity Rules for generation projects including completion of Static and Dynamic power system studies for the project

  • Assistance with review of generating system vendor model documentation (such as design and system data sheets, RUG etc.) to ensure alignment with AEMO’s review requirements of the project connection application

  • Assistance with the negotiations surrounding the NER technical requirements of AEMO such as negotiating proposed terms of Generator Performance Standards, etc.

  • Supporting clients in technical discussion and negotiation with network service providers to manage technical outcomes and risk as they relate to primary and secondary systems, control and communications systems, and network connection agreements.

  • Lead and/or support clients in the generation registration process.

Preferred Qualifications

About You

  • 15 + relevant professional experience in the National Electricity Market (or equivalent regulated network).

  • Post-graduate qualifications in Electrical Power Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent direct and relevant experience in advanced power system analysis techniques

  • Experience working for an Engineering Design Consultancy

  • Successful track record in field of expertise and substantial project experience

  • Eligible for Chartered Engineer status with Engineers Australia

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with both internal and external clients around key dates

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical design documentation

  • Experience in managing project budgets and resources

  • Exceptional levels of written and oral communication
