We work in all aspects of transport planning but particularly in multi-modal transport planning and modelling. We are currently expanding our team in the St. Albans office and we have a vacancy for a Senior Transport Planner to join our Spatial Planning team.

The Spatial Planning team works on a wide range of projects for local authorities and Highways England, including technical audits of individual planning applications; the preparation of responses to Local Plan examinations; the management of complex major infrastructure projects including the coordination of specialist teams; assembling and assessing planning data for input into large-scale transport models; developing technical studies to identify and prioritise multi-modal transport improvements; and the preparation of large-scale spatial transport plans which set out the long term vision and route-map for delivering innovative transport improvements within towns, along major transport corridors and across sub-regions.

You will have an important role, working with colleagues within the team in providing technical support into assigned tasks ensuring successful delivery of technically challenging and dynamic projects, as well as having the opportunity to manage junior staff.

The Spatial Planning team’s work requires someone who has a balance of qualitative and quantitative skills, with previous experience in areas including development management, local plans, the preparation of transport plans and strategies, local and area wide multi-modal transport studies, junction modelling and stakeholder engagement. You will have a desire to expand your and others’ knowledge and capabilities within transport planning, and apply a proactive approach to contributing to and attending internal and external seminars, conferences, as well as team and project meetings and workshops.

Job Duties

As a Senior Consultant you will be expected to mentor graduates, impart your wisdom and check tasks undertaken by your more junior colleagues. You should have the ability to handle the project management of smaller projects, including cost control and client liaison.

You will:

  • Oversee and conduct planning and technical work and generate solutions under less supervision.

  • Explain technical concepts to others including our graduates and clients.

  • Provide direction and technical advice to junior project team members, taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential.

  • Critically review transport assessments and travel plans and provide succinct and robust technical comments

  • Review and prepare transport plans and strategies including the identification and high level assessment of schemes.

  • Review and build small-scale junction models to assess local highway operations and proposed scheme

  • Manage and undertake the gathering and review of planning data.

  • Manage your time to ensure you meet deadlines.

  • Prepare or supervise preparation of technical presentations and present information to internal and external groups.

  • Project manage small (or elements of larger) projects, managing the production of analysis and associated outputs, ensuring the integrity of these outputs.

  • Support bidding and work winning opportunities.

  • Undertake continuous professional development and seek to achieve relevant accreditation.

  • Participate in cross-office projects and proposals.

Minimum Requirements

  • You need to have excellent technical and report writing and presentational skills

  • You will have an understanding of the principles of highways, public and active travel transport planning

  • You will have an appreciation of transport planning, design and broader planning guidance and best practice such as elements WebTAG, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and the National Planning Policy Framework

  • You will have experience in working for or with local authorities and other public sector bodies

  • You will have an interest in and knowledge of future transport innovations and be motivated to seek solutions to transport challenges in whatever shape or form they take

  • You need excellent analytical skills, and be proficient in the use of Excel or similar packages to analyse data as well as the application of GIS software

  • You have the ability to communicate technical and non-technical information internally and externally through written and verbal means

  • You should have the ability to handle the project management of smaller tasks and projects, including cost control, project schedules and liaising with and presenting to clients

  • As a Senior Consultant you will be expected to mentor graduates, impart your wisdom and check tasks undertaken by your more junior colleagues

  • You will have an analytical mind and background – you want to know the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of things

  • You pride yourself in producing good quality outputs and have a desire to exceed client expectations

  • You are good at managing your time to ensure you anticipate task delivery and checking that you meet those pesky deadlines

  • You have a positive attitude and are approachable to junior colleagues

  • And you should be able to explain technical concepts to others, especially our graduates and anyone else who may ask in an engaging and inclusive manner

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree/Masters qualification in geography, engineering, town and country planning or similar, from an accredited college or university

It would be great if you had:

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE

  • A record of continuous professional development or working towards professional accreditation

  • A Master’s degree in Transport Planning or related subject / social based discipline
