Job Summary

We are currently expanding our Transport Planning team in the St. Albans office and we have a vacancy for a Senior Transport Planner to join our Spatial Planning team. AECOM is at the forefront of innovative transport planning. We are supporting multiple clients in managing their transport networks, finding solutions to complex challenges, and getting them ready for the future. St Albans is north of London, only 30 minutes from Kings Cross / St Pancras London, and is on the Thameslink railway line with direct routes to Croydon, Wimbledon, Luton, Brighton, and more.

The Spatial Planning team works on large, longer term framework contracts which provides a continual pipeline of interesting and varied work. We currently hold a contract with Highways England to support them in their role in the planning system and we also have a contract with Hertfordshire County Council in providing a range of transport planning services.

Our Transport Planners work on small, medium and large scale projects, ranging from reviews of planning applications and assessment of individual junctions, to developing transport strategies which consider the future multi-modal transport needs of important transport corridors or regions. You will join an active supportive team with the opportunity to develop your skills and expand your experience.

As a Senior Transport Planner, you will:

  • Review transport assessments and travel plans and provide succinct and robust technical comments

  • Develop and/or review junction models to assess the operational performance of proposed schemes

  • Develop transport studies, plans or strategies for towns, corridors or regions

  • Manage and undertake the gathering and review of planning data

  • Explain technical concepts to others including more junior colleagues and clients

  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of presentations and present information to internal and external groups

  • Manage small (or elements of larger) projects, managing the production of analysis and associated outputs, ensuring outputs are delivered on time and to an excellent standard

  • Provide updates to project managers/directors in terms of the progress of tasks in line with programmes

  • Provide direction and technical advice to junior project team members, taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree qualification in geography, engineering, transport planning, town and country planning or similar, from an accredited college or university

  • Experience in the preparation and/or review of transport assessments and travel plans

  • Experience in the building and/or review of junction models using at least one of the following software: ARCADY, PICADY, LinSig and TRANSYT

  • Experience in estimating trip generation using TRICS (or alternative methods)

  • Experience in estimating growth in traffic using TEMPRO (or alternative methods)

  • Experience of developing transport studies, plans or strategies of any scale

  • Fluent in the use of Excel or similar packages to analyse data

  • Ability to handle the project management of smaller tasks and projects, including cost control, project schedules and liaising with and presenting to clients

  • Experience or a desire to mentor and supervise more junior colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a relevant subject (desirable)

  • Experience in using GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS (desirable)

  • Experience of liaising with clients and stakeholder engagement (desirable)

  • Familiarity with aspects of WebTAG and experience in applying guidance (desirable)

  • Familiarity with aspects of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and experience in applying guidance (desirable)
