Job Summary

Our Traffic and Local Roads team have a vacancy for a Principal Highway Engineer in our St Albans office. St Albans is conveniently located just 20 minutes from London St Pancras and a short hop off of the M1, M25 and A1(M). Our large office is situated just a few minutes’ walk from the Station and the historic city centre which boasts a fantastic range of eating and drinking establishments alongside many small independent shops and high street stores.

The Traffic and Local Roads team provides concept, preliminary and detailed design and network modelling on a wide range of projects for local authorities and contractors plus supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a specialised traffic and highways interface.

The successful candidate will be joining a growing team that is actively involved in the delivery of projects and services to a range of both local and national clients including:

  • Midlands Highways Alliance

Currently designing and building over £100m worth of infrastructure across the south east through the application of our professional services and Construction Frameworks as a single collaborative vehicle for the Design and

Build of local transport schemes:

Design and Build of the A40 Eastbound Bus Lane (scheme value £40m). This scheme will see the construction of over 8km of dedicated bus lane, two new bridges, footway and cycleway facilities to the west of the city and the construction of a new 500 space park and ride facility.

A34 Interchange Project (scheme value £20m), the design and construction of two new southbound slip roads onto the A34 which will ease localised congestion, unlock

development land and ring fence the land for a further strategic park and ride site in the city.

Redesign of Wycombe town centre’s transport system, a £40 million, multi-disciplinary scheme that will bring the town together by changing the traffic flow around the town centre as well as improving other streets and pedestrian spaces.

Two sections of the South East Aylesbury Link Road (cumulative value £50m)

  • London Highway Alliance Contract

This joint initiative between TfL and London's boroughs aims to deliver a reliable, reputable and cost-effective highways service across the Capital providing highways professional services to over 20 local boroughs via these contracts. These services cover the full spectrum of transport planning and traffic engineering services our LoHAC contracts deliver for TfL, ranging from policy development and advice, cyclical programmes of Footway and Surfacing improvements, varying scale Road Space Management Schemes to involvement in the design of major transport schemes such as Cycle Super Highways and the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street.

The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team. In addition to delivering work within the local office the role will occasionally involve working with other AECOM teams in the UK and Ireland. We are therefore seeking candidates who are able to work flexibly across other AECOM offices as projects dictate to support the wider business.

Further, the role offers opportunities to work in AECOMs wider European, Middle East, India and Africa regions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake Health & Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for safety, health and environment in design.

  • Act as a Project Manager, following comprehensive training and successful accreditation on the AECOM project management systems, including monitoring quality, programme and financial, performance system.

  • Manage the career progression of line reports including mentoring and agreeing individual training plans.

  • Lead the design and assessment of a range of highway engineering and local transport schemes, including preparation of design drawings, reports and technical notes.

  • Ensure the technical content and quality of all outputs are in line with the project brief, design regulations and standards, approving the work of others.

  • Share knowledge to ensure the wider team are up to date with current best practice, techniques and innovation.

  • Support Senior Management of Local Roads team including with recruitment.

  • Prepare detailed client briefs and fee proposals and contribute to major bids.

  • Develop new and existing client relationships.

Minimum Requirements

You will have:

  • A successful track record (> 10 years) in the management and delivery of a portfolio of highway engineering and transport schemes through both preliminary and / or detailed design stages.

  • Experience of monitoring financial and programme performance

  • Multi-disciplinary project experience as project manager/ task leader.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate detailed understanding and application of relevant design standards and regulations.

Whilst not essential any of the following skills would be desirable:

  • Appreciation of traffic modelling

  • 3D Design (MX or Civils 3D)

  • Urban Design/Streetscape.

  • Project Management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2)

  • Highways asset management and maintenance.

  • CSCS Card holder.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A relevant degree or HND and a Chartered Engineer or membership of a professional institution and working towards an appropriate Chartered status.
