Job Summary

AECOM’s Sacramento, CA office is seeking an Architectural Historian with experience in historic research, field inventory, and site assessment for the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Section 110, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance.

The successful candidate would become a part of a dynamic northern California environmental planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private and nonprofit clients. Our Sacramento office has built a reputation for innovation, high-quality work, attentive client service, and a collegial office culture that fosters the highest degree of teamwork. AECOM’s Sacramento-based projects often combine environmental analysis and review with urban design, policy planning, engineering and design, and other related elements.

Primary responsibilities would include the evaluation of significance for local registers, California Register of Historical Resources, and the National Register of Historic Places, assessment of adverse effects and significant impacts to historic properties, preparation of Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation, development of integrated cultural resources management plans and mitigation measures, and preparation and review of reports for cultural resource and environmental compliance.

With the right blend of experience and expertise, the Architectural Historian would collaborate with other team members on business development efforts. The successful candidate may also lead external workshops on technical innovations and legal/regulatory changes related to architectural history, publish work relevant to practitioners, and engage in other internal and external activities that would help to grow this practice.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 5+ years' experience in California

  • Meet Secretary of the Interior's standards for work in history and architectural history

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Must be detail oriented, thorough, well organized and effectively manage time

  • Team player with excellent listening skills and diplomacy; willingness to work with multiple different colleagues on a variety of initiatives

  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment with a sense of urgency

  • Strong organizational skills – ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Consultative, service-oriented mindset and collaborative problem-solving skills

  • Proactive and goal-oriented, with the ability to work independently and manage change effectively
