The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an interest and knowledge of transportation/rail and transit planning.

The selected applicant can look forward to supporting projects such as major transportation planning studies, feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, comprehensive transportation plans, rail and transit (commuter rail, freight rail, bus transit) studies and strategic plans, Complete Streets and Bicycle and Pedestrian plans, as examples of current work.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Prepare work from a varied list of assignments, following direction given by the Team Planning Manager or Deputy Planning Manager. These include:

  • Collects and develops a variety of statistical data, including GIS maps, graphics, infographics and visualizations for public meetings, preparation of online and intercept surveys, as well as assist in report preparation at varying stages, such as existing conditions, alternatives development, preparation of short, medium and long-term recommendations and final reports.

  • Supports preparation of planning studies and reports for new and updated plans, programs and regulations.

  • Reviews or assists in the review of planning projects related to transportation information, including land use policies, demographic analyses, feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, environmental impact of projects and long-range planning needs.

  • Assist in preparation of detailed reports and development proposals to government and public agencies/bodies.

  • Coordinates community review of public project materials, presentations and attendance at public meetings, charrettes and workshops.

  • May participate, pending availability and workload, and under direct supervision, in field evaluations and assessments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Practice and skills in relevant computer hardware and software programs, which include Microsoft Office (proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and Word as example), and ability to work with Undergraduate degree in planning or engineering with studies in transportation planning, urban planning, or related field

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, research and data collection

  • Knowledge of a relevant specialization including transportation (rail, transit, complete streets, as example) and land use

  • Analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations

  • Excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public

  • ArcGIS 10.0 experience to produce maps for project reports and Internet applications considered integral part of anticipated assignments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in planning with focus on transportation, urban planning skills, public policy, or related area of study or demonstrated combination of education, skills, knowledge, ability and experience.

  • Experience and knowledge of commuter rail, public transit projects preferred. Knowledge of connected and automated vehicles a plus.
