AECOM is seeking a Research and Development Risk Analyst to be based in our Pittsburg, PA location.
Position requires good problem-solving skills, attention to details, and ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting to meet formal schedules and milestones. The successful candidate will have experience reviewing engineering drawings – including plot plans, process flow diagrams (PFD), and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), the ability to understand complex ES&H issues and a strong understanding of chemistry and laboratory safety in a research setting. Due to the nature of the work, candidate must be a US Citizen
Position Requirements include:
The position will be responsible for leading hazard identification and analyses of laboratory- to bench-scale research and development (R&D) activities using a formal “What-If?” approach at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV. This position reports to the R&D SARS Supervisor but will work in an interdisciplinary team environment carefully following internal procedures to meet the goals and objectives of the R&D project/laboratory permitting process.
This position requires dealing with highly technical issues and the ability to handle complex employee relations issues. This position assures that the federal safety review process is fully documented and the final safety review package carefully assembled and uploaded to the NETL tracking system for review and approval.
The position also leads and participates in annual safety and compliance assessments of the approximately 50 permitted R&D projects located at the NETL Pittsburgh site.
Schedules and chairs hazard identification and analyses meetings for on-site projects undergoing review for a new or modified operating permit.
Prepares reports of hazard analyses for review and approval following NETL’s internal R&D Safety Analysis and Review System (SARS) process.
For new projects or those undergoing a major modification, works to the formal Project Management Plan developed under the NETL’s Conduct of Research Operations (CROps) process.
Assists in implementation of current and/or new safety and health standards requirements advising the federal ES&H representative of necessary changes to projects.
Proactively identifies, communicates and resolves health and safety issues and concerns.
Works with federal and contractor research staff and supervisors to ensure that safety and health requirements documented in the project’s operating permit are maintained.
Performs on-site inspections of work areas to monitor compliance to applicable safety, hazard communication, and other regulations.
Supports Department of Energy SARS and CROps processes.
Provides technical support and advises other engineering and research groups.
Ensures adherence to company policies, procedures, and related government regulations.

- Bachelor’s degree in a physical science (chemistry, physics, geology), engineering (mechanical, chemical, or electrical), or safety-related field. 5 years of position related experience - including at least 2 years working in or assisting other professionals in a research and development setting. Demonstrated knowledge of techniques to identify and control hazards in a laboratory setting.
Professional certification [Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), or Professional Engineer (PE)].
Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience conducting and leading formal hazard analysis reviews (HAR) using a “What-If” or other structured approaches such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, or Hazard and Operability Analysis. Application of HAR in a research and development setting preferred. Formal training in hazard analysis techniques preferred.
