Job Summary

AECOM’s Water Business Unit is actively seeking a highly talented Senior Surface Water Engineer for immediate employment in the Phoenix, Arizona office. The successful candidate will provide technical oversight, project management experience, and lead surface water modeling and design support efforts for stormwater, transportation, flood control and H&H projects. This position will also involve training, mentoring, and teaching less-experienced staff. The position will involve working on projects for the state, local municipalities, federal agencies, and private clients to conduct hydrologic/hydraulic modeling.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Project Manager overseeing project financial metrics and work performed by multi-disciplinary teams working on water resources projects.

  • Performing and/or directing design of stormwater control facilities (including detention/retention ponds, storm drain systems and open channels) and directing surface water modeling, mapping, and designing of stormwater and flood control structures

  • Work with a team of hydraulic modeling professionals to manage technical tasks, complete quality assurance/quality control reviews, and prepare high quality work products including documentation of model development, calibration, results, and reports, including the application of engineering judgement.

  • Prepare design drawings, plans, sections, details, and profiles/sections within the Autodesk Civil 3D, AutoCAD MEP, and/or MicroStation

  • Project manager overseeing project design and analysis of a variety of hydraulic modeling, floodplain mapping, drainage, and municipal stormwater projects.

  • Delegate work, mentor, train and supervise less experienced staff while managing projects of varying size and complexity.

  • Directing and reviewing documentation and calculations, and preparing engineering reports

  • Plans and prepares, or reviews, technical specifications according to the contract documents

  • Assisting with the marketing and proposal efforts for a variety of existing and new public and private clients.

  • Supporting the Surface Water and Transportation Business Line.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in hydrology, hydraulics, and/or water resources

  • 10+ years of experience in surface water modeling and design

  • Certified Professional Engineer required, preferably in Arizona or seeking reciprocity

  • Exhibits in-depth knowledge of surface water modeling, planning and design projects and related technologies

  • Ability to communicate the technical aspects of projects to a wide audience

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as exceptional organizational skills

  • Expertise in performing 1-dimensional steady and unsteady (HEC-RAS) and 2-dimensional (HEC-RAS, FLO-2D) Hydraulic Analyses and Modeling

  • Demonstrated familiarity with hydrologic modeling software (e.g. HEC-HMS), and plan set production design software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D, StormCAD, Microstation, Inroads Storm and Sanitary)

  • Capable of using spreadsheet, word processing and standard office software

  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and strong attention to detail.

  • Ownership and accountability for quality deliverables

  • Demonstrated understanding of business development and proposal response process

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Business development experience including client relations and proposal preparation

  • Good understanding of local and regional markets and able to support marketing effort in pursuing work for water and transportation projects
