Our Transportation team currently have a vacancy for a Highway Engineer as expanding their Traffic and Local Roads team in our Nottingham office We work for a number of clients with a significant portion of our work being for the Midlands Highway Alliance (MHA); a group of 21 local authorities in the Midlands area of the UK with AECOM as the sole provider of professional and technical services.
The successful candidate will be recently Chartered or Incorporated or working to achieve this status and will have proven design and some project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget. They will have experience of working as part of project teams developing concepts, feasibilities, preliminary design, detailed design, specifications, bills, and overall project management for a variety of highway and traffic schemes, urban realm and public transport improvements.
The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team. We are looking for people who will provide highways technical experience and mentoring to other team members. As such the successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show both technical and leadership qualities and have experience of a variety of highway schemes.
The Nottingham office has an established track record of successfully delivering transportation projects throughout the UK in both the urban and rural environment. The office is located in the East Midlands with good transportation connections. The office has a range of capabilities including Environment, Health & Safety, Asset Management and a highways laboratory together with our transportation design and planning capability. We are now looking to enhance and grow the Traffic and Local Roads team with an individual with a sound technical background that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The team provides concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design, project management and site supervision as well as associated scheme assessment services on a wide range of highway and traffic projects and also supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a highway interface.
Our clients are from the private and public sector and include Leicestershire County Council, Derbyshire County Council, Leicester City Council and Rutland County Council. Collaborative working with both our clients and our supply chain partners is fundamental to our success.
Our recent/ current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international projects including:
Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (8Km) for LCC.
Cycle Improvement scheme for Leicester City
Oakham Town Centre Improvement for Rutland CC
Highway Infrastructure design for new Leicester City development
Various junction improvement designs
The appropriate level of technical and project management expertise is required in order that the Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to a high standard:
Receive project brief and carry out briefing of the junior team members and lead on analysing data, development of design drawings and report production.
Undertake Health & Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design.
Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.
Attend project progress meetings.
Assist in the preparation of detailed client briefs or fee proposals for Manager Approval, and contribute to major bids.
Provide technical input, technical leadership and project management across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering
Show technical leadership, and through experience, mentor and guide the skills of others in computer based applications and tasks including the use of software such as MX, AutoCAD & Civils 3D, ProjectsWise, Micro Drainage, Microstation & Inroads, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject.
Take a lead role on projects within particular skill area – e.g. drainage team leader, pavement design leader, geometric layout etc.
Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required.
Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.
Liaison with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.
Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office discipline and project.
Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment.
You will have excellent technical and communication skills along with experience of undertaking a range of highway/ traffic engineering design projects.
Demonstrate experience of Highway/ Traffic Engineering design at concept, feasibility, and preliminary and detailed design level.
Understanding of Health and Safety including PSDP responsibilities.
Urban street, traffic signal, cycling, walking, road safety, public transport, ITS and parking design.
Application and use of DMRB, Manual for Streets and the Traffic Signs Regulations and Traffic Signs Manuals.
Proficient user of AutoCAD.
Contributing to bids and proposals.
Mentoring junior staff.
Able to offer experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas:
Pavement design and refurbishment
Signs and road markings,
Management of design and delivery of highway maintenance schemes
Experience of preparing written work
Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees.
- You will have a relevant degree (BSc, BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject) and will be a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or will be working towards an appropriate status with membership of a professional institution (MICE and or MCIHT).
