Job Summary
AECOM’s Transit and Rail Signals group is seeking an enthusiastic Signal Specialist to join our team of over 300 railway specialists. Working out of our Mississauga Commerce office, the assignment is mostly in the GTA, but future assignments might include remote or semi remote locations in Northern Ontario or sites in Eastern Ontario. Reporting to the Manager – Signal Testing & Construction the candidate will deliver railway infrastructure projects, Signal and Communications Contracts focusing on reviewing and providing oversight for Work Plan Methodology (WPM) and Signal Testing.
The appropriately qualified candidate will monitor the quality of work done by Contractors and evaluate the progress of the project to determine if time schedules and contracts are being met. The candidate will also monitor contractor safety programs to assess that client requirements are satisfied. They may also participate in the evaluation of contractor’s performance and will administer and direct work during the construction and testing phases.
The role includes reviews with project designers and contractors to ensure that procedures are followed and that contractors are in compliance with project plans, contracts and specifications.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Projects will be for:
o North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA C&S standards
o LRT and Subway transit systems
Complete design reviews
Review Contractor Work Plan Methodologies (WPM) and Signal Test plans
Review and understand Contracts
Attend project progress meetings
Oversee Contractors while signal works and testing are being completed in the shop or field
Load and test software in training center as required
Prepare technical specifications for traditional design-bid-build and P3 / Alternative Design and Procurement / design-build projects
Research and test new signaling equipment as required
Assist with implementation and modifications of processes
Know and meet clients’ expectations for all signal works including testing
Produce reports for clients
Follow all safety regulations and AECOM procedures including safety observations

Minimum Requirements
Highschool + 6 years of related experience in railroad signal construction or maintenance activities or Diploma/Certificate + 4 years of related experience in railroad signal construction or maintenance activities
Valid driver's license and access to personal vehicle
Preferred Qualifications
Signal Training taught by a Class 1 Railway or equivalent courses in a Signal Construction and/or Testing environment
working on Canadian Railways
working on Class 1 mainline projects, and
knowledge in the delivery of railway signal projects
Strong knowledge of applicable Railway Rules and Regulations including:
AREMA
CROR
Transport Canada’s E-17, Grade Crossing Regulations and Grade Crossing Standards
Railway Safety Act, and MX, CN and/or CP Standards
Experience writing technical specifications
Experience preparing and performing signal testing for both CTC and Crossing systems
Experience working in a Signal & Communication Wiring Facility or on Field Construction Crew as a leader or above
Ability to prepare, understand, interpret Contracts to review work or submittals and answer RFI’s
Strong problem solving skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, internal and external clients and contractors
Must be able to assist with the planning of Signal works from the existing infrastructure through to implementation of the final design and be able to communicate phasing plan to designers, contractors and internal & external clients
Keen desire to learn new skills, excellent teamwork attitude but must be able to work solo as well
