Our Los Angeles Buildings + Places Studio is a multi-disciplinary design practice featuring professionals in Urban Design, Master Planning, Architecture, Interiors, Landscape Architecture, and Economics. Our projects vary widely in size, type, scope and complexity, and often draw on collaborations with other disciplines within the AECOM family We are looking for a designer who wants to apply their passion and enthusiasm for design in a collaborative and progressive work environment. The designer will be leading with project teams and creating on conceptual and schematic design packages, and assisting with working drawings, supporting RFP responses and interview preparation materials.
The ideal candidate will be a strong conceptual designer, with a passion for problem solving and story- telling. Applicants should have capabilities in 3D modeling and architectural visualization. Candidate must be able to lead a team effort, work independently and help develop the more junior staff.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:
Build and maintain client relationships through excellent design and service
Help coordinate projects with all consultants
Able to actively participate in a project from beginning to end
Ability to communicate design concept and intent through various media is critical both to internal team as well as with clients.
Strong planning ability with communications skills to lead a client thru not only a plan but overall design concept
Assists in preparation of designs, quantity calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings, and final working drawings
Maintains conformance with building standards, established architectural practices, and applicable building codes
Participates in business development activities through client contact with Leadership and other team members
Supervise interns and junior and intermediate designers at all phases of the project
Help the team to stay on time and on budget
Help in recruiting new employees
Responsible for initiating and developing engineering drawings through completion for assigned projects in conformance with the requirements, applicable codes, and design criteria established by the project’s discipline engineers.
Under minimal supervision, may develop complex engineering drawings.
Applies a solid level of understanding within a specific discipline.
Understands codes, permits, and software applications related to the discipline.
Fully understands the process of preparing designs and drawings using project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
Basic understanding of engineer’s process of performing and verifying design calculations to support the overall project design.
Fully understands the purpose and use of vendor documents and reviews discipline supplier documents for accuracy. Can also review other discipline’s supplier documents.
Fully understands the use of requisitions and the role of materials management, and can review/advise on purchase orders and subcontracts.
Collects data on manpower, man-hour, and labor costs requirements for design staff to aid in evaluating the budget.
Intermediate knowledge of cost estimating methods and performs material take-offs for the discipline.
Intermediate knowledge of discipline’s materials costs and concept of cost analysis and forecasting.
Basic knowledge of the project change control process and can identify a potential change.
Fully understands the discipline’s equipment and material lists.
May provide technical guidance to less experienced design staff.
6+ years of related experience
Experience in not only space planning and design concept development but also in all phases of the project including predesign through construction administration
Working knowledge of building codes, standards and building structures
Work on multiple projects guiding other team members
Experience in programming large clients with groups of varied and competing needs
Thorough knowledge of the design process, including FF&E, furniture systems and specifications,
color and materials
Flexibility to travel within the United States
Experience and proficiency with BIM-Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, Photoshop, or other related CADD and 3D type software
Working knowledge in the use of computers for making architectural drawings, calculations and 3-D visual simulations
Basic knowledge of standard construction techniques and principles
Experience working on projects of 50,000+ or large
Corporate interior experience through all phases, including large scale (150,000+ sq. feet)
LEED Accreditation a plus
RA, NCIDQ or CID preferred or in the process of obtaining
