Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Structural Engineer for immediate employment in the Kitchener, ON office. The candidate should be experienced with detailed design as it relates to building structural design. The work will be primarily related to industrial, commercial, transit, and recreational facilities. Projects include: modifications, reinforcement and/or additions to existing buildings in addition to new structural and foundation support systems. The structural EIT/engineer will be responsible for the completion of all technical activities on assigned projects, including but not limited to, the design of structural components such as foundations and the structure's superstructure. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct structural design and analysis in concrete, steel, masonry, and wood buildings

  • Field inspection and construction administration of different type of projects. General review the construction work to ensure the design/contract conformity

  • Work as part of a multi-discipline team (Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Air Quality, and Landscape) to prepare engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, technical reports, field inspections, construction work packages and project documentation

  • Provide input into or prepare schedules, material specifications, bid documentation and project performance reporting

  • Assist the senior engineer with preparation of working drawings for structural disciplines as required

  • Drawing co-ordination with architectural, civil, mechanical and electrical disciplines

  • Assistance with construction contract administration – shop drawings review, change orders, and answer RFIs

  • Ensuring designs conforms to all applicable codes and client standards

  • Participate as a productive member of a design team for the Buildings + Places group

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university in Canada

  • 2+ years of building design experience

  • A strong background in structural design and constructions

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • A working knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (e.g. ABC, NBC, CSA A23.3, CSA S16, CSA 086, CSA S304, etc.)

  • Familiar with structural and finite analysis software such as:

  • STAAD.Pro v8i SS4

  • MASS (Masonry Design Software)

  • Tedds 2013 and Tedds 2013 add-in for Word

  • Mathcad

  • Structural design and evaluation experience of buildings

  • Self-starter and perform work with little to no supervisions

  • Good understanding of contract rules and regulations, specifications, and roles of the consultant on site

  • Security and background check as required by Client

  • Must possess a G Class driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of building design experience

  • Well organized, self-directed work habits with an ability to prioritize and schedule tasks in a dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated written and verbal English communication skill proficiency effectively communicating complex design or technical issues

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Knowledge of building systems and construction methods

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite. Experience with MS Projects and Visio considered an asset

  • Good Knowledge in STAAD structural design software

  • Construction phase experience in contract administration and field review is an asset

  • Desire to grow within an exciting multi-disciplinary office

  • PMP accreditation considered an asset
