Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Be a part of a small team of scientists that develop and evaluate novel materials and processes. Support various projects: Growing and evaluating crop plants for space food production, evaluating hardware proposed for growing plants in space; Testing material properties of new alloys, composites, and polymer and inorganic coatings; developing new additives that provides advanced functions in coating and composites, developing new materials and surface treatment process for life support systems in future spacecraft for space exploration missions. Apply scientific principles in research and technology development; generally function in one or more of the following activities: literature review, experiment design, material synthesis, biological and chemical analysis, and material characterization.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform analytic or scientific studies in a particular discipline and evaluation of experimental results; applies scientific principles in research and technology development.

  • Independently identify, collect, and analyze technical information relevant to a specific research as a member of an experiment or project team.

  • Define the technical challenges to be address, develop mathematical models, formulations and equations based on the technical problem and propose possible solutions.

  • Design experiments to test proposed solutions.

  • Conduct experimental investigations and comply with scientific documentation standards, system specifications and experimental procedures.

  • Coordinate and work closely with other scientific, engineering, logistics, financial, and program management disciplines in conducting analytic and/or scientific studies.

  • Prepare and present briefings about research findings.

  • Provide technical inputs, ideas and concepts for proposals and business development.

  • Perform other related or associated duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, geology, physics, mathematics or related science field (horticulture) or equivalent experience, and 5 years of job-related experience. Excellent communications and analytical skills, working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs. Position may require travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in research laboratories conducting biological studies or materials science research. Demonstrated ability to work in teams with diverse membership including other scientists and engineers. Experience with materials characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
