AECOM Railroad Designer in Houston, Texas

Job Summary

Candidates can reside outside of the Omaha area. AECOM has over 300 offices in the United States and working remotely from other offices is highly supported by AECOM. Our project teams work together remotely between offices every day. AECOM also offers relocation packages to candidates that prefer to relocate to Omaha.

AECOM is seeking a Freight Rail Design Technician to join our growing Railroad Transportation team in Omaha, NE. The successful applicant will assume a design role in an established Freight Rail Design Department. The successful applicant will assist the team in the development and mentoring of junior Freight Rail Design team members. Candidates require 7-15 years of experience with conceptual and detailed design of roadways, highways, freight railroad, passenger railroad, or rail transit alignments including alignment design, profile design, grading design, cross sections, and plan production. Candidate will receive mentoring by senior staff to provide them the tools to design complex track alignments including turnouts, crossovers, sidings, setout tracks, loop tracks, special track work, and various types of rail yards. Previous experience should include providing preliminary and final design with alignments, profiles, cross sections, earthwork calculations, plan production, and checking plans. Some experience with Microstation and Inroads in preferred but not required. Freight or passenger railroad experience is preferred, but candidates with transit or roadway experience will also be considered. This role is a very dynamic opportunity including a vast range of work duties both in the office and occasional field assignments which provides on-site experience to expand the knowledge and skills that AECOM sees as very important to an employee’s growth and willingness to stay with AECOM for a long term career. The periodic efforts in the field will include site visits to rail projects to meet with subconsultants and clients, guide or lead topography surveys, assist with construction staking, perform construction observation duties, and field inspection of completed track construction projects.

Minimum Requirements

HS/GED + 4 YORE or AA/AS (US) + 2 YORE or Diploma/Certificate (Canada) + 2 YORE or

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 – 15 years of railroad design and engineering experience with Class 1, Short Line railways and Rail Industry’s clients

  • Experience with Microstation and Inroads software.

  • Positive problem solver with a flexible approach to work, commitment to excellence, motivated, and a strong team player with excellent mentoring skills.

  • Must be able to work collaboratively with other interfacing multi-disciplinary team members (other rail system engineers, as well as other civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineers and technical staffs.)

  • Dedicated to the Quality Management of deliverables.

  • Strong verbal communication skills.

  • Experienced in the preparation of preliminary to final track and civil design of freight or passenger rail systems.

  • Experienced with AREMA, FRA and FTA and Rail Clients’ Standards.

  • Valid Driver’s License.
