Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Construction Inspector for immediate employment for the Houston, TX office.

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing transportation improvement projects. May perform material testing to ensure material meet project specifications. Employees at this level may perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

The essential responsibilities for this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

  • Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts.

  • Conducts routine and non-routine laboratory tests of highway construction materials, designs materials, makes calculations and records results.

  • Maintains a daily activity of work in progress and status of completion.

  • Maintains construction project records, processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance.

  • Completes pay documents for actual work completed and plotted as needed.

  • Enters pay quantities in Site Manager with all the required documents for contractor payments.

  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

  • Interprets PS&E policy and clarifies procedures.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years in the construction of transportation engineering or transportation work

  • Willing to work the hour’s necessary to complete the inspection; this work may require day and/ or night inspection along with holidays and weekends

  • Must possess a valid driver license with acceptable driving record.

  • Must be able to obtain ACI Certification Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I within 6 months of date of hire.

  • Must be able to obtain Level 1B within 12 months of hire.

  • Move up to75 pounds

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies

  • Communicate effectively written and verbal with Staff

  • Knowledge with applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques

  • Knowledge with applicable testing methods, processes and procedures

  • Knowledge with applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance .

  • Knowledge with The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups

  • Leading, assigning, reviewing and monitoring the work of others

  • Knowledge with materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

  • Skills in preparing and maintaining records, files and reports

  • Knowledge with the use of personal computers and applicable programs, applications and systems

  • Maintaining a safe working relationship

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 + years on constructing Highway & Bridge projects using TxDOT Standard Specifications

  • NICET II/III or ACI Certifications
