AECOM Senior Environmental Consultant (Alternative Delivery) in Hamilton, Ontario

Job Summary

AECOM's Environment team is actively seeking a Senior Environmental Consultant (Alternative Delivery) with experience in leading alternative delivery assignments, Class Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Individual EAs. The successful candidate will be based in our Mississauga, ON office. Additional locations may include our Markham, Experience obtaining approvals and consulting regulatory agencies on requirements and permitting for water, transit and transportation infrastructure projects also required. Demonstrated experience developing, implementing and managing Environmental Management Systems based on ISO 14001:2015 on alternative delivery projects is an asset. The successful candidate should demonstrate solid technical competency, and a high level of skill to analyze and solve complex problems including planning and scheduling, budgeting, change and claims management, project progress, and cost and revenue forecasting. The candidate must be highly motivated and accountable, work collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator. Organizational skills and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities.

Responsibilities include but aren't limited to:

  • As part of our team, the successful applicant will lead environmental activities associated with both pre- and post- award phases of alternative delivery projects including:

  • Collaborate within Environmental Business Line (EBL) to facilitate work planning activity and ensure team is prepared to execute and deliver pre- and post-award works; oversee pre- and post-award fee development; complete quality management and lead environmental risk/change management.

  • Development, negotiation and management of environmental scope of work and fee agreements with contractors, subconsultants and project management.

  • Direct and manage the entire environmental scope for a project, providing guidance to subordinate managers, enforcing company and project policies, and acting as the primary environment liaison.

  • Advise on legal, regulatory and commercial matters acting as the primary environment liaison between AECOM and client/contractor.

  • Leading the drafting of environmental contractual obligations including generation of Project Specific Output Specifications and Project Agreements as Technical Advisor and development of Project specific procedures and standards as Owners Engineer.

  • Additional responsibilities will include working with and supporting project managers in leading EAs for various clients and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams; participation and contribution to AECOM technical practice group(s) and supporting business development efforts, including proposal writing and participation in industry associations.

With world class technical expertise, leading edge technology and innovative project delivery capability around the world, AECOM’s global environmental practice helps industry and government meet their business goals – to achieve compliance, reduce or eliminate risks and manage impacts. We provide advisory and technical services to help clients cleanup and close contaminated sites and surplus operational facilities and restore them for reuse, plan and permit new facilities, address critical climate change issues, restore habitats and water quality, protect natural and cultural resources, maintain compliance, and cost effectively manage residuals and wastes.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS in Environmental Management/Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Urban and Regional Planning or related field + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Class G driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten years of relevant experience in an environmental consultancy role

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management/Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Urban and Regional Planning or related field.

  • Five years of specific experience in delivery of design-build or alternative delivery (P3) projects, with experience in both pre- and post-award phases and for projects with construction value in excess of $250 million.

  • Proven ability to successfully manage large, multi-discipline highway or rail assignments is required including demonstrated experience in contract negotiations, financial management, fee estimating, risk management and change management.

  • Extensive experience with the Transit Project Assessment Process, Ontario Environmental Assessment (EA) Act, Municipal Class EAs, and other legislation related to the position (e.g. Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act and their regulations).

  • Excellent communication skills with proven success in engaging design managers, discipline leads and contractors and negotiating with regulatory agencies to secure project approvals.

  • Full or Provisional membership in a professional body (e.g. Registered Professional Planner (RPP and MCIP); Canadian Environmental Professional (EP); or Project Management Professional (PMP).

  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015.

  • Familiarity working with EMS software.

  • Bilingual (English and French) an asset.
