Our Canadian team works both nationally and internationally on exciting river management solutions, from managing urban flooding and erosion risk, to dam removals and fish habitat restoration. We are currently looking to strengthen our river management and design capabilities in Ontario. The role is open to our Guelph, Kitchener, Markham or Hamilton offices.

The successful applicant for the Fluvial Geomorphologist /River Engineer position will be a motivated individual, excited to contribute to the growth of the fluvial geomorphology practice area within AECOM – in Ontario and across Canada. He or she will work with AECOM’s senior fluvial geomorphologists, hydraulic engineers, and ecologists to deliver various stream restoration projects, including restoration of natural processes and habitat conditions, erosion control and fish passage improvements. Depending on the applicant’s background and interest, opportunities exist within AECOM to grow further experience in other hydraulic or geoscience fields including limnology.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize basic scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope

  • Collect and enter data, and apply technical principles and theories

  • Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance

  • Supporting ‘Natural Channel Design’ and stream restoration projects

  • Conducting detailed field investigations under senior staff mentorship

  • Analyzing and interpreting geomorphic and hydraulic data

  • Maintain an understanding of current approaches, methods and protocols in river management and design

  • Working collaboratively across offices and disciplines

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., geomorphology, river engineering, physical geography)

  • 1+ years of relevant experience

  • Knowledge of fluvial form, processes and functions – including their dependence on local physiography and their influence on ecological habitats

  • Proficiency in aerial photography interpretation

  • Proficiency in specialist river management tools - ArcGIS, HEC-RAS 5.0 (1D/2D), AutoCAD Civil 3D, drones

  • Knowledge of environmental data collection, identification, investigation, and data entry

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (English)

  • Strong detail-oriented work style

  • Ability to manage personal project workload and meet deadlines

  • Eligibility for membership of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) or Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Holder of relevant Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist status

  • Familiarity with Natural Channel Design approaches, from concept development through to detailed design, construction implementation and monitoring

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (French)
