Job Summary
The Transportation division of AECOM has an opportunity for a Senior Bridge Engineer to join our Bridge Group in Calgary, Alberta. The Bridge Group is involved in the pursuit and delivery of major transportation projects including large and complex bridges throughout Western Canada with the ability to support other AECOM offices throughout Canada and the US. The appropriately qualified applicant will demonstrate an established career in transportation, specific to Bridge Engineering. They will be responsible for delivery of a range of bridge projects for both private and public sector clients. The Transportation Division in Calgary is made up of professional and technical experts in the highways, planning, bridges and rail disciplines.
As a Senior Bridge Engineer you will use your knowledge and understanding of bridge engineering and delivery expectations to effectively lead bridge projects which are executed under conventional or alternative delivery models. Moreover, you will provide guidance to junior and intermediate staff in the delivery of projects. Implied is an ability to complete a bridge design from planning through to detailed design stages and into construction.
As a key team player your responsibilities will include coaching, mentoring, participating in bridge group leadership and driving team performance. Ultimately you will be responsible for the successful delivery of a range of projects for both private and public sector clients. You will also be expected to support the preparation of technical proposals for work opportunities and be involved with business development as appropriate for a senior engineer.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Produce, or manage the production of, design and construction documents for bridges from concept through construction - This effort may include development or review of design calculations; use and evaluation of design software; development of plans, specifications, quantities and cost estimates; writing of technical reports; and support of construction phase services
Provide lead technical support and undertake technical analysis and design of highway bridges and other structures, including developing new methods and techniques, to complete complex or unique studies; this includes new design, load rating and rehabilitation of existing structures
Develop solutions to a wide range of difficult technical structural design problems
Ability to manage complex technical work independently while mentoring and guiding less experienced team members
Must be able to work in a self-directed manner in all aspects of bridge design and document production process
Preparation of reports, proposals, and other documentation for clients and review agencies
Participate in bridge group leadership and effectively communicate workload requirements to Bridge Manager and manage resources on projects
Assist with staff development, and provide input and recommendations relative to staff needs, performance, and remuneration
Support client relationships by performance, service and effective communication
Ability to work to meet tight project schedules
Reports to the Manager of the Bridge Group
Minimum Requirements
BA/BS + 8 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Licensed Professional Engineer in Alberta (or eligible for registration)
Must have a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution
Master’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline is preferred but appropriate work experience will be considered as an alternative
10+ years in bridge design and construction with recent bridge design experience
15+ years of experience performing/leading bridge design projects
Experience in successfully leading bridge projects
Experience in overseeing and managing small teams of engineers and technicians
Complex structural design and analysis skills with a strong working knowledge of bridge modeling and analysis, steel girder design and prestressed concrete girder design
Superior technical understanding, design abilities and current on bridge technologies
Advanced understanding of structural engineering principles as well as the application of prevailing design codes
Experience participating in multi-disciplinary engineering projects, with ability to coordinate with supporting design disciplines, e.g. drainage, roadway, lighting, aesthetics, etc.
Ability to work independently
Strong interpersonal, negotiating, problem-solving and analytical skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Advanced knowledge in concrete design, including a knowledge of reinforced and prestressed concrete material and component behavior
Recent experience with and understanding of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6)
Experience in successfully leading bridge projects under a Design Build or P3 alternative delivery projects
Recent experience in delivering western Canada projects, primarily in Alberta and an understanding of Alberta Transportation and City of Edmonton staff, policies and procedures
Experience in project management, including experience with business and contractual agreements
