AECOM Senior Bridge Engineer in Dublin, Ireland

Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer to join our small busy but fast growing Dublin Bridge team. This role will suit technically able, self-motivated individuals with the desire to advance their career in a dynamic environment by gaining further and varied experience in the exciting and fulfilling discipline of bridge design.

Due to AECOM’s demanding workload, the Bridges team in Dublin are looking to recruit Bridge Engineers with excellent experience and ability in analysis, design and strengthening, primarily of bridges but also a variety of other structures.

The successful candidates will need to be recently chartered with 5+ years’ experience. With experience of working as part of a team, in the analysis and design of road and/or rail bridge structures in the major construction materials, together with some project management experience. They will join a team of highly experienced engineers and have an ideal opportunity to contribute to the ongoing success of the Bridges discipline in AECOM.

AECOM’s Bridges Departments in Dublin have extensive experience in the design, checking, strengthening and construction supervision of all types of bridges, including highway, railway and foot/cycle bridges, in steel, pre-stressed concrete, reinforced concrete and masonry. The Ireland Scotland Bridges Team currently numbers 50+ staff ranging from Technical Director to Graduate level.

The type of construction for which we have been responsible ranges from the design of footbridges, highway bridges, rail bridges to the strengthening of simple masonry arch bridges. All work is undertaken, as appropriate, in accordance with the current Standards, including the Eurocodes, the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), and relevant standards.

Teamwork, planning, skill and ingenuity are the qualities we aim to bring to all the projects with which we are involved, so that they can be constructed efficiently and are delivered to the Client’s complete satisfaction. In this endeavour, we work very closely with our colleagues in the geotechnical, traffic, highway and railway departments. Consequently, we are proud of the fact that, on both highway and railway projects, we have gained a reputation for working carefully and collaboratively with our Clients to develop successful and innovative design solutions, constructed using a variety of techniques.

Finally, AECOM’s presence in nearly every part of the world means that there is always the opportunity for overseas commissions to be undertaken in the Republic of Ireland.

Currently, we involved in a number of exciting and important projects, AECOM are providing the detailed design, ecological services, PSDP and construction supervision service for the M7 Naas Newbridge Bypass Upgrade and M7 Osberstown Interchange & R407 Design and Build contract for Kildare County Council. AECOM has been appointed to provide engineering consultancy services from preliminary stage through to construction stage for the infrastructure improvements at Glanmire village in county Cork. The scheme will include a greenway which will include a number of new foot/cycle bridges. The bridge team are involved in the Newry Southern Relief Road Scheme which includes the provision of a single carriageway link to alleviate traffic congestion occurring between the A1 and A2 strategic routes within Newry. The scheme should include the provision of WS2+1 overtaking facilities and facilitate movement of vessels on the Newry Canal/Newry River therefore an opening bridge maybe required. AECOM has been commissioned by Meath County Council to provide Engineering Consultancy Services from preliminary stage through to construction stage of Local Distributor Road 4.

Previous projects including Strabane Bridge a landmark cable stayed footbridge with a main span of 80m and an architecturally shaped leaning pylon. AECOM was commissioned for the engineering services for the multi-modal access point for Broadstone Gate Luas stop as part of the Luas Cross City contract. AECOM carried out the detailed design of the iconic Peace Bridge where the structural solution comprises of a double curvature self-anchored suspension bridge with two inclined pylons dividing the structure into three continuous spans over the River Foyle.

Job Responsibilities :

  • A high level of technical knowledge and skill is required in order that the requirements of the job can be undertaken to the necessary standard:

  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Strong ability in finite element modelling

  • Good knowledge of the Eurocodes.

  • Good communication skills (written and spoken)

  • Understanding of soil mechanics

  • Supervision of graduate engineers and technicians

  • Planning and project administration

  • Prepare, implement and assess contract documents

  • Report writing

  • Client liaison

Minimum Requirements

  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures

  • Strong ability in finite element modelling

  • Good knowledge of the Eurocodes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The successful candidates will have a relevant degree and will be a Chartered Engineer (MICE, MIStructE or equivalent recognized professional qualification) with strong post graduate experience in bridge analysis and design.
