Job Summary
AECOM is seeking a Design Director for Michigan. This role can be based in Detroit, Southfield or Grand Rapids. The primary responsibilities will be to cultivate and maintain client relationships, oversee and lead multiple projects through all phases of design, and actively lead the design process for each of these clients and opportunities. Additionally, he/she will work with the firm leadership to create strategies for growing the practice regionally. He/she will work with regional leadership to ensure a coordinated effort to support business development endeavors.
As Design Director for Michigan, he/she will lead Architectural Design for projects in Commercial, Corporate, Higher Education, Healthcare, Research, Civic/Cultural & Mixed Use market sectors within the Region. Collaboration with key leaders in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Interiors, Building Engineering, Economics, and Strategy will be critical. The Design Director will provide design leadership within the Architectural practice across all markets to promote design excellence in collaboration with other disciplines to develop a holistic approach to project delivery & design research. Reinforce market recognition through participation in architectural design community, including architectural schools, practice organizations & civic events.
Providing leadership by example with projects and providing knowledge sharing through pin-ups, charrettes and publication of ongoing design work through intranet and host multi-office video design presentations. Provide day-to-day project leadership on projects from initial business development, proposal & interview to design development, contract documents, and construction administration, for multiple projects.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Business Development Leadership:
Work with Market Sector leaders to identify key project pursuits to lead design with teams from concept and throughout delivery
Maintain understanding of trends, drivers & delivery methods affecting the marketplace
Develops marketing plans, anticipates opportunities, and identifies market trends
Builds strong relationships and interacts regularly with clients, teaming partners, and stakeholders linked to the market sector
Works with the National Market Leadership, the Buildings + Places Business Line Executives, and Regional & Marketing leadership to develop the growth and pursuit strategy
Partner with key individuals within AECOM to procure projects including P3 and Design/Build opportunities
Support business financial goals with adequate number of projects to grow the practice and develop expertise
Leadership as Design Director:
Oversee the design process and work with team members to discover the clietns vision and ensure that it is infused into the design of the project at all stages
Provide guidance and direction to ensure presentations and deliverables meet a high standard of graphic quality that exceed client expectations and advance the reputation of the firm
Establish an encouraging and collaborative environment for all project teams
Participate in the annual performance review of employees, further developing staff skills and growth through open dialogue
Client Relations and Business Development:
Maintain and cultivate existing client relationships, including introduction of firm leadership
Build and strengthen connections with clients on a day-to-day basis through a comprehensive understanding of their project mission, values and goals
Collaborate with all B+P offices in pursuing work when a multi-office team is important for the success of the project pursuit
Practice Leadership:
Actively participate in building the positive perception of AECOM in Michigan
Provide mentorship, coaching and motivating project teams and individuals
Promote a fun and collaborative work culture
As the firm’s growth continues into new markets and new regions, play an active role in the development of our growth
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture
15+ years related experience including 7+ years’ experience in sales, business development and/or marketing
Must be detail oriented, thorough, well-organized and effectively manage time
Proven record of maintaining client relationships
Ability to discern new markets and develop business in those areas
Team player with excellent listening skills and diplomacy; willingness to work with multiple different colleagues on a variety of initiatives
Ability to work in a high-paced environment with a sense of urgency
Outstanding oral communication, and presentation skills
Strong organizational skills – ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Consultative, service-oriented mindset and collaborative problem-solving skills
Proactive and goal-oriented, with the ability to work independently and manage change effectively
Preferred Qualifications
