Job Summary

Our Ground Engineering team in Chesterfield, Derbyshire requires a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with extensive experience of providing geotechnical design input to infrastructure projects. The role is predominantly in connection with Highways and Rail projects but will also involve work in other sectors include nuclear, buildings, water, tunnelling, waste and land remediation.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the industry with a proven track record in the successful technical delivery of projects and will be fully conversant with the standards that apply throughout the industry. We are looking for an ambitious team player with strong technical skills who wishes to assist in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.

Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises around 190 staff, providing one-stop access to a variety of services. The Chesterfield team comprises around 30 geotechnical staff and has an established track record of successfully delivering ground engineering schemes throughout the country. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background in geotechnical design that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The team provides services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design and construction on a wide range of contracts.

Our clients are from the private and public sector and our leading UK clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Homes England, BP, Shell, Thames Water, Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers and overseas clients.

We have an impressive portfolio of major national and international infrastructure projects. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract

  • Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel

  • Mersey Gateway Project

  • Smart motorway schemes on M62 and M6

  • A1 Leeming Bar to Barton upgrade to 3 lane motorway

  • Earthworks and Slope Remediation Schemes for Network Rail and maintenance contractors

  • Multi-million pound regeneration of Brent Cross, including highway, local waterway and bridge design

  • Foundation and tunnelling design for Stockholm Bypass

  • Lead Designer for Lyme Regis Environmental Improvements Phase iv

  • New Cameroon National Stadium

Job Responsibilities:

  • We require a Principal Geotechnical Engineer highly experienced in undertaking geotechnical studies, interpretation and design for complex new build infrastructure and in particular for UK major highways.

  • Experience in leadership of design teams and management of design delivery and ground related risks, particularly in a design and build environment, would be very advantageous.

  • The role will involve design and reporting of geotechnical works including slope stability, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks and ground improvement, and will require experience in soil/structure interaction and numerical modelling using finite element analysis. The ability to write clear and concise technical reports is an essential requirement. You will be expected to supervise and mentor junior staff and manage delivery of work packages to defined programme and budget. The role will require awareness and understanding of the AECOM Project Management procedures, their importance and their application to projects, including monthly progress and budget reviews of projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Geotechnical Engineer with proven track record in geotechnical design.

  • Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills.

  • Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues, client and delivery partners.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write clear and concise technical reports is essential.

  • Extensive experience of finite element analysis using Plaxis and other geotechnical software including WALLAP and SlopeW.

  • Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection, design of foundations and piles to EC7, retaining wall design and settlement analysis.

  • In depth knowledge of a wide variety of UK ground conditions but particularly those of Central and Northern England.

  • In depth knowledge and experience of relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England.

  • Valid UK driving licence is essential. Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A first degree in Civil Engineering, although individuals with an Engineering Geology or similar background will be considered provided they are strongly numerate.

  • MSc in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or similar.

  • Chartered Engineer with ICE, IOM3 or equivalent.
