Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for an Associate Director – Bridge Engineering to join our Chelmsford Bridges and Structures team, which has an established track record of successfully delivering a wide range of transport structures schemes.

Our modern office immediately adjacent to the railway station in the heart of Chelmsford has good transport links being only 35 minutes from London. In addition to a large bridges and structures team of circa 30 staff, it also accommodates busy geotechnical engineering, development and transportation planning and development engineering teams. We are now looking to enhance and grow the bridges and structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The bridges and structures team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections, construction support and management services on a wide range of bridges and associated railway infrastructure schemes. The team is involved in local, national and international work with a variety of clients both from the public and private sector including design & build partnerships with contractors.

A list of some of the current projects which the Chelmsford Office is working on includes:

  • LoHAC North-West. - London Highways Alliance Contract is a long term commission under which AECOM together with FM Conway is responsible for maintaining all Transport for London (TfL) highway structures in the North-West area of London.

  • CAFA rail bridge inspection and assessment. Long term commission with bridge sites located on the Anglia, LNE and LNW routes.

  • HS2 Phase 2b

  • Thames Tideway Combined Sewer Outfalls – design of major civil engineering infrastructure for the reinforced concrete chambers and culverts circa 10m high.

  • London Local Boroughs – working for many Boroughs including LB Bromley, LB Southwark, LB Ealing, LB Kingston. We are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of highway structures.

  • Wessex Capacity Programme

  • Suffolk Highways Contract – Provider of professional services to Kier including bridge inspections and assessments, bridge strengthening and bridge renewals.

Job Duties:

As an Associate Director – Bridge Engineering, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Undertake, project-manage and provide technical leadership on bridge engineering schemes from feasibility through to detailed design.

  • Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation.

  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures.

  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures.

  • Client liaison and the production of tenders, including quality documentation and costings.

  • Client relationship management including business development.

  • Project Management including program and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

  • Mentoring graduate engineers in their progress to Chartership.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • Significant experience of leading project teams, including major project multidisciplinary teams, developing a range of bridge and other associated structures scheme solutions from initial concept through to detailed design for implementation.

  • The role will suit a self-motivated individual looking to lead teams technically and to advance their career in a dynamic structures team of around 30 engineers and technicians.

  • Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes.

  • Significant experience in road and rail bridge projects.

  • High level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design.

  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.

  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent.

  • A Chartered Engineer with ICE or IstructE.
