AECOM's Impact Assessment and Permitting team in Alberta is looking for a Vegetation and Wetland Ecologist to support our existing projects activities and to grow our capacity to serve clients on challenging and exciting projects across Western Canada. This role will be based out of our Calgary office.
The candidate will have 5 years of experience conducting and leading standardized vegetation and wetland field surveys, knowledge and experience in the taxonomic identification of vegetation, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator.
Individuals should have a background conducting vegetation and wetland assessments, data analysis, and reporting.
Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities.
The position will involve leading or supporting vegetation and wetland field surveys in support of pre-disturbance assessments, baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Lead or support a field crew to undertake vegetation and wetland field surveys throughout Western Canada, although mainly in Alberta
Work remotely for extended periods as part of a field crew or independently
Provide technical support and guidance to less experienced field staff
Data entry, analysis, and report writing
Fully qualified scientist. Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
Requires general familiarity within a broad field of scientific knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.
Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
Solves problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
Participates in planning required to achieve prescribed objectives.
Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.
Performs inspections and tests to ensure compliance
Participates in developing corrective measures and procedures. Formulates hypothesis, performs research and makes recommendations

- BA/BS in environmental science or biology + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Designated as a Professional Biologist with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
Authenticating Wetland practitioner status in Alberta or ability to obtain designation within 1 year
Demonstrated experience identifying, classifying, and delineating wetlands to meet the requirements under the Alberta Wetland Policy
Demonstrated experience leading field teams and conducting biological field work
Demonstrated experience using Global Positioning Systems and map and compass orientation
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment as well as independently
Ability to work in both field and office environments
Possess a valid driver’s license
