Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking an Intermediate Civil Engineer to join our growing Western Canada Environment team. The right candidate can work locally from our Calgary AB office, and AECOM can provide hybrid work options to give you the flexibility you need to do your best work. This is a full-time position.

We have a significant backlog of major northern mine remediation, solid waste management, remediation and civil design projects that need great team members. The role encompasses civil and hydraulic structure designs adapted to your experience and career aspirations. Our preferred candidate has a can-do attitude and is an enthusiastic, team-oriented professional with a strong technical background who is up for working on these fascinating projects.

Responsibilities:

Work will vary depending on the applicant's experience and career aspirations. This position is ideally suited to an intermediate civil engineer with aspirations to develop their technical career on large multidisciplinary projects ($10M+ engineering budgets). Engineering projects will focus on mine reclamation, civil works, water management, remediation implementation, and waste infrastructure.

Below are example responsibilities you can expect when working within the AECOM team to deliver all phases of projects:

  • Engineering Design:

  • Designing and calculating surface water drainage systems, including channels, ditches, and storage ponds.

  • Designing and calculating seepage interception systems.

  • Designing road plans, profiles, sections, and details.

  • Preparing water management, road and site grading models utilizing Civil 3D software

  • Developing technical solutions to complete civil grading, site remediation, Surface water management, channel and pond design, road design and solid waste management designs.

  • Working with our local drafting team to develop drawings based on the design and calculation output.

  • Applicant should have experience with supervising and directing modelling and reviewing and taking professional responsibility for civil grading designs.

  • Preparing documentation for design projects, including design criteria, project specifications, technical letters, memorandums, reports, drawings, and detailed design packages

  • Preparation of regulatory submittal documents for development.

  • Preparing and reviewing the development of technical solutions as part of a design team, assisting in the design and evaluation of engineering applications from options assessment to detailed design phases.

  • Preparing and reviewing field programs required to collect and analyze outstanding data gaps for design advancement.

  • Supervisory duties:

  • Collaborating with junior and intermediate staff on client, co-worker, sub-contractor and sub-consultant communication and management

  • Providing oversight on multi-disciplinary projects, such as proposal development and change management, safety and logistics, regulatory and stakeholder management.

  • Direct junior staff during the completion of work. Collaborate with peers to create a productive team environment.

  • Collaborate with other AECOM staff and business lines to deliver multi-disciplinary environmental/civil projects.

  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, and sub-consultants.

There are also opportunities for candidates who would like to be involved with project management to have access to training and career opportunities if of interest, but this is not a specific requirement of this role.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Civil, Environmental, etc.)

  • 4+ years of related experience in civil or environmental projects.

  • Registered Professional Engineer.

  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Below are examples of experience that would be an asset when working in this position:

  • P.Eng. registered with multiple provincial or territorial jurisdictions.

  • Proficient technical writing experience for detailed design reports and regulatory document submissions.

  • Expert in working with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

  • Well familiar with National Master Specification.

  • Some travel for short periods will likely be required in this position within Canada

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite; excellent knowledge of Excel and Word

  • 10+ years of technical experience within any following fields:

  • Civil engineering design, preferably in earthworks, dams, grading, et

  • Northern or remote project work

  • Mine closure and remediation

  • Remedial option assessment, implementation, system operation and maintenance

  • Geotechnical and/or geological engineering, geochemistry, or mining

  • Working within a variety of regulatory frameworks

  • Construction oversight, QAQC, contract administration

  • Personal Attributes

  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; conduct yourself with integrity, work within multi-disciplined teams, deal with complex issues, and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Have a high level of initiative and enthusiasm for getting things done.

Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $77,000 to $108,000.
