Job Summary

AECOM's Impact Assessment and Permitting team in Calgary is looking for an Ecology Technician to support our existing project activities and to grow our capacity to serve clients on challenging and exciting projects across the province. This is a temporary position expecting to last from August till December 2018.

The appropriately qualified candidate will have 4+ years of experience conducting and leading terrestrial ecology field work as well as knowledge and experience in the taxonomic identification of plants/animals and implementation of field protocols, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator.

Individuals should have a background conducting terrestrial wildlife habitat assessments and species inventories, and associated data analysis and reporting. Experience leading migratory bird studies is essential. Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities. The position will involve leading or supporting terrestrial ecology investigations including field work in support of baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct data collection and field investigations to document baseline conditions according to study requirements in urban and remote sites in Alberta

  • Work as part of small and large field crews

  • Data entry and report writing

  • Adhere to AECOM’s Health and Safety Protocols

  • This position will require individuals to work remotely in rugged terrain within Alberta area for periods of time as part of field crews based on project locations

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in environmental science or biology, from a recognized University or College

  • 5+ years of related experience, including migratory bird experience

  • Demonstrated experience identifying fauna of Alberta and the rest of the Prairies (e.g. birds, amphibians, snakes, mammals, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience conducting and leading teams for biological field work

  • Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation​

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field protocols

  • Experience writing and preparing technical reports

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Wilderness First Aid and/or wilderness experience
