The Central Midwest Area Cultural Resource Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Archaeological Technician for temporary employment with our Bismarck, North Dakota office. However, the candidate could be working on various projects in the Upper Mid-West, or elsewhere on the Great Plains, including surveys, evaluative testing and data recovery projects, depending on staffing needs throughout the Central Region. This is a part-time variable position, meaning, work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.
This position reports to the Field Director or Archaeological Supervisor.
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
Conducting archaeological survey, shovel testing, investigations/excavations; screening and describing soil deposits.
Documenting archaeological and historic resources. Must be able to learn to take accurate field notes; draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches
In time, the position may also require completing site forms, narrative site descriptions, and written contributions to reports.
Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.
Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts
Consulting with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments
Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, History, Museum Studies, or related field and have attended an archaeological field school
This position requires 0-2 years’ experience working on cultural resources surveys or projects. In some cases, field school, applied coursework or laboratory work in anthropology, archaeology or related field may be substituted for experience.
Must pass pre-employment drug screen
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Knowledge of basic field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms, perform extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt
Basic knowledge of GIS applications, Microsoft applications
Flexibility to travel overnight, including out of state travel, for up to 3+ months at a time
Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude
Strong attention to detail, and ability to follow specific instructions
Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff
Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling standing and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Must have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, prolonged walking and standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions, often in remote locations
Due to the nature of this position, US Citizenship is required
General familiarity with cultural resource management laws and practice, including Section 106 and NEPA compliance.
Some cultural resource survey experience is preferred.
Preference given to qualified candidates residing in the northern Great Plains.
Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material is preferred.
Experience with data collection using a handheld GPS unit is preferred but not required.
CPR/First Aid training is preferred, but not required
