Our UK & Ireland business can provide a comprehensive portfolio of multidisciplinary engineering skills, with our structural engineers playing a leading and influential role in the development of building projects. We are currently engaged in a vast array of building projects from world class sporting venues through to commercial properties, healthcare, higher education and research facilities, hotels and resorts, industrial and manufacturing developments. In Belfast the projects we work on are primarily located in N Ireland, though we also deliver projects across the UK and overseas. Examples of projects either delivered or currently being designed by the Belfast Structures Team include:
Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children - AECOM civil & structural team in Belfast are part of a multi-disciplinary design team which also includes AECOM architects. This Executive flagship project at the Royal Victoria Hospital campus in west Belfast involves design and construction of a state-of-the-art healthcare facility dedicated to caring for children & young people from across Northern Ireland. The development also provides direct bridge links to the new Maternity & Critical Care Centres, currently being developed on the site & also delivered by AECOM C&S team in Belfast. The hospital consists of a 13-storey reinforced concrete frame building with a floor area of approx. 55,000m2, incorporating acute wards & specialist services.
IFA National Football Stadium, Belfast – AECOM provided civil & structural engineering and mechanical & electrical consultancy design services on the redevelopment of IFA national stadium at Windsor Park. The project included the construction of new grandstands, changing facilities, museum & adjoining leisure centre. The stadium redevelopment was fully modernised with the attendance capacity increased to accommodate 18,500 seated spectators.
Art & Architecture, Chateau La Coste, Provence – AECOM have provided Civil and Structural engineering services on a number of expressive and innovative art galleries in the south of France. Each of the separate gallery buildings has been conceived by world renowned Architects, including Oscar Niemeyer, Tadao Ando, Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano, which have exhibited artists such as Sean Scully, Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois. These projects give the Belfast team an opportunity to work on elaborate & award-winning designs.
Villa La Coste Hotel & Spa, Chateau La Coste, Provence – AECOM provided the civil & structural engineering services for the design & detailing of a new hotel within the Chateau La Coste domain, a biodynamic vineyard and destination for art & architecture, set in the beautiful French landscape of Provence. The development included construction of 28no. luxury villa suites, each with individual plunge pools, relaxation gardens and terraces offering expansive views over the vines and valley. The hotel complex also offers an outdoor swimming pool, spa, library, bar facilities and access to the sculpture park walking trails that are present through-out the expansive domain.
Old See House, Mental Health Out-Patient & Day Care Centre, Belfast – AECOM provided the civil & structural engineering services for the design and detailing of a new mental health day-care centre in Belfast. The healthcare development also offers respite residential facilities for patients. The project has changed the way mental healthcare is delivered within Belfast and is linked to the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Facility at Belfast City Hospital complex, a project also delivered by AECOM C&S Belfast team in collaboration with our M&E engineering team.
All our buildings are conceived, designed, and constructed in a collaborative way to ensure they meet the ranging requirements of the client brief, within the constraints of time and budget, all while still performing sustainably. Increasingly, we work with our other internal business lines such as architecture, building services engineering, environment, transportation, project management and cost management to deliver an all-encompassing service to our clients and their projects.
Assisting in the development of our projects through the different design stages
Developing analytical & design skills
Producing designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, design intents and final working drawings for various elements of a building structure under the supervision of an experienced engineer
Collecting & analysing data under the supervision of an experienced engineer
Using various tools at your disposal to solve engineering problems
Liaising with other disciplines within the project team to coordinate designs
Performing work in accordance with agreed upon budget & timescales under supervision
Contributing to hazard elimination & reduction
Conducting site visits during the construction phase of projects to inspect the works
Contributing to a wide range of projects as the work load dictates
You will start working on live projects almost straight away, as we believe the best way to learn is through real world, on the job experience. This experiential learning will be supplemented with training from a variety of sources specific to the Structural Engineering Practice, as a part of our ICE accredited training scheme. This will include lunchtime training seminars & formal training courses.
Some of the topics your training and development will focus on include:
Design methods for various structural elements using a range of structural materials,
Practical application of current design software that allows us deliver design solutions efficiently and effectively
The skills necessary to present our engineering solutions – including sketching & the use of 3D drawing in RevitCommercial awareness & contracts
Health & Safety
This training will ensure you have a full set of design skills & are equipped to engage confidently with the wider design & contractor teams. Through the course of your graduate scheme, you will develop confidence in designing in a variety of structural materials, & building types. You will also begin to develop an awareness of commercial arrangements, contract & procurement types, and how they impact our work. As you develop, you will be given more autonomy and responsibility for your designs. Eventually you will be expected to take on more responsibility in managing the projects you are working on, both from a design & financial perspective, providing you with challenging & rewarding development opportunities & career progression.

The following attributes and requirements are anticipated in the graduates we wish to recruit:
Masters degree accredited by a professional engineering institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Ideally degree qualification at 2:1 or higher.
Enthusiasm and drive to become a Chartered Engineer.
Demonstration of the desire to create opportunity or make the most of opportunities to develop academic, engineering or life experiences.
